CREATING VISUAL NARATIVES

Photography Workshop with Thomas Dworzak, Alan Chin and Iva Sidash

The goal of this workshop is for participants to improve their skills creating a photo essay. Each participant will be assigned a specific topic or story to shoot in the local area, and have two days on which to shoot it. Participants will receive both practical and conceptual feedback on their work, and will also review each other’s work. The goal will be for each participating photographer to conclude with a completed photo story that will be shown as a slideshow to the entire festival.

Discussions will cover ethics, best practices, and different approaches of documentary photography.

PROGRAM
Day 1, Sept. 9:

14:00 -17:00 – group gathers for the first time. Instructors will introduce themselves and present very brief samples of their own work, and participants will as well. Each participant is asked to show 5 images representative of their work; these can be from a single or multiple bodies of work — participants will upload these images before the beginning of the class. Assignments will be given to each participant. The group will be divided into 3 sections evenly among the 3 instructors.

Day 2, Sept. 10:

Each participant will go and start shooting their assignment. Instructors will stay in touch by phone and text, and troubleshoot as needed. Depending on the different logistics of each assignment, participants will return in the afternoon and will be encouraged to meet briefly with their instructor.

18:00 – 18:30 – full group meets for first day debrief.

Day 3, Sept. 11

SAME as Day 2

Day 4, Sept. 12

Any final shooting should happen in the morning.

14:00 – 17:00 – each team meets and instructor leads edit / review of each story.
18:00 – Full group meets for final debrief.

In theory we could show their work on that evening but knowing how things go it may better to give ourselves more time to build the final slideshow.
